Category vs Tags? Music Website Scaling & Performance in mind

I’m tasked with creating a music website that houses multiple genres. The client already has a substantial amount of user that will be migrated, so scaling and performance are key from the start.

The site has around 30 – 40 genres that need to be added. It’s been a while since using WP and I’m not sure if having ONE post assigned to multiple categories or having a very large number of them will affect anything in terms of performance, structure, and SEO.

Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Which example below would be the best suited for structuring a music website via WordPress?

Example 1:

Music Reviews (Category)
– Rock (Sub)
– Hip-Hop (Sub)
– R&B (Sub)

Interviews (Category)
– Rock (Sub)
– Hip-Hop (Sub)
– R&B (Sub)

Example 2:

Music Reviews (Category)
– Rock (Tag)
– Hip-Hop (Tag)
– R&B (Tag)

Interviews (Category)
– Rock (Tag)
– Hip-Hop (Tag)
– R&B (Tag)
