Do not show post from a taxonomy when pulling recent posts

I have a recent query that is pulling the 6 most recent posts from 4 different custom post types which is working good. What I would like to do is have it so that any post that has a particular taxonomy of category with the term of featured not being shown in the recent posts. How would I go about adding this NotIn

<?php
$args = array(
‘post_type’ => array( ‘stories’, ‘outtakes’, ‘explorer_reports’, ‘view_finder’),
‘post_status’ => ‘publish’,
‘posts_per_page’ => 6
);
// query
$the_query = new WP_Query( $args );

?>
<?php if( $the_query->have_posts() ): ?>
<ul class=”recent-articles two-columns”>
<?php while( $the_query->have_posts() ) : $the_query->the_post(); ?>
<li class=”recent-article”>

<figure>
<a href=”<?php the_permalink(); ?>”>
<?php
if ( has_post_thumbnail()):
the_post_thumbnail( ‘slideshowthum’ );
endif; ?></a>
</figure>
<div class=”brief”>
<heading><a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>” rel=”bookmark” title=”Permanent Link to <?php the_title_attribute(); ?>”><?php the_title(); ?></a></heading>
<div class=”excerpt”>
<?php echo wp_trim_words( get_the_excerpt(), 20 ); ?>
</div>
</div>

</li>
<?php endwhile; ?>
</ul>
<?php endif; ?>

<?php wp_reset_query();?>
