Due to our server setup we don’t have FTP installed and everything is managed though SSH. Our custom theme is updated via Github deploy keys and we’re pretty happy with this as we can automate the whole process.

The trouble is that WordPress insists on FTP connection details to install plugins and do other maintenance tasks. I checked various plugin pages and the code seems to be largely stored in SVN which rules out forking a plugin repo and deploying that way. To keep the plugins up-to-date would be more trouble than it’s worth.

I’ve searched through the documentation and come up with zilch.

Has anybody else managed to run a WP installation without FTP or is it baked-in to the whole way WordPress operates?
