URL Rewrite htaccess ecom site

Trying to clean up some urls on an ecom site, but can’t for the life of me get it to work.

the existing working url is something like

http://domain.com/index.php?main_page=index&manufacturers_id=140

and I’d like to change the url to

something like http://domain.com/the-product-name/

Any help, very much appreciated.
