How does insert_record() and update_record() work?

I encountered the following code in a plugin I’m inspecting. I could not find any PHP or WordPress resource on insert_record() and update_record() functions. All I could find was a resource in Moodle Data Manipulation API. Can someone help me? How are they even working in PHP environment with MySQL?

public function save_marks($marks_data)
{

    $table_name = "marks";
    //echo $table_name;
    insert_record($table_name,$marks_data);
}
public function update_marks($marks_data,$mark_id)
{
    $table_name = "marks";
    return $result=update_record($table_name,$marks_data,$mark_id);
