How to transfer an active WordPress website to Hostgator for redevelopment?

I have a running WordPress website on a host server and want to redevelop a new site to be hosted by Hostgator so that the redevelopment wouldn’t affect the existing site. As I was also planning to build the new site with WordPress, I registered for the Optimized WordPress package with them.

Could someone please advise me what would be the best approach to go about setting up the new site on Hostgator? My aim is to have it completed then only replacing the old site with it – this way the downtime will hopefully not be too long.

I also registered for a test domain thinking I might be able to use that to build the new website on. But I believe the Optimized WordPress package that I got with Hostgator only allows one domain. If so will there be any way that I can migrate/transfer it over later and then copy the content of the new site into it?

Sorry if it’s too confusing – I’m unclear myself so really hope the explanation makes sense and somebody would be able to shed me some light!
