Prevent redundant permalink category base and parent category

My permalink category base is mysite.com/news/ and most of my categories are placed underneath a parent category named news so I’ve got a ton of category list pages that all start with mysite.com/news/news/… Is there a way I can remove the redundancy of the duplicate category base and parent category names?

I noticed that even with this setup as it currently is, when I manually type in the URL’s without the duplicate (mysite.com/news/category instead of mysite.com/news/news/category), WordPress uses them fine just like that for some reason (without even redirecting). But if I could WordPress to dynamically create links without the redundant duplicate, that would save me a lot of trouble and ensure they’re working everywhere on my site without having to manual edits to every link I can find.
