“Single sign-on” to extend beyond WordPress

I am still very much a beginner with all things programming, including WordPress. I have been having a debate with several developers on whether or not to use WordPress for my project. I have decided that the best course for of action is to build a user base that starts on WordPress but can also can extend beyond it to any other programming language we decide to use. Preferably I would like it so once we have a site built with react for instance the user would automatically be logged in to that site without having to sign up. The way I’ve been conceiving this is to have it so my WordPress installation has the ability to “share sessions” with various other programming languages. I admittedly have no idea of this is possible, and what it would entail.

I am building a network of interconnected websites that will share a common user base. In the long term I will need to be able to build sites in any language and have them adopt the same users. So I definitely need to make sure I get off on the right foot. I intend to start with a handful of sites contained on a single WordPress multisite installation. This needs to have the potential to smoothly extend beyond WordPress when needed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
